In August 1949, Hoffmann's factory (near Dusseldorf) was granted the first license to manufacture Piaggio's Vespa scooter. One month later, on 9 September 1949, the factory changed its name to Hoffmann-Werke. Hoffmann made thousands of Vespas each year from 1949 to 1953, ultimately making at least 60,000 Vespas by the end of production.
